Code of Conduct

We are committed to providing all of our members and guests with a high quality experience in a respectful, safe, clean, and family-friendly environment. All are welcome here, we simply expect all students to conduct themselves in a respectful manner, based on the guidelines below. We thank you for complying with our code of conduct.

If you have any questions or concerns, we are happy to help however possible. Please feel free to contact us at
info@breathejiujitsu.com at any time.

CODE OF CONDUCT
1. All uniforms should be clean, washed, dry, and free of rips and tears.

GI CLASS: White gis.
NO GI CLASS: All black no-gi attire. No-gi attire must be free of zippers, buttons, and pockets.
Colored graphics, patches, embroidery designs, etc. are welcome! Please refrain from wearing logos of other academies when possible (except for Art of Jiu Jitsu or other academies owned by Mendes Bros Black Belts).
If you need assistance with uniform, please contact Jamie at info@breathejiujitsu.com at any time.

2. We require that students refrain from training when sick or infectious to avoid imposing risk on others. This includes colds/fevers/flu/viruses, as well as fungal rashes/ringworm/other infections on the skin. This is for the safety of everyone. Thank you for your cooperation.
3. Please use changing stalls or bathrooms to change.
4. Please wear shoes/sandals throughout the academy, especially in the restrooms. We will be barefoot on the mats at all times. Feet should be clean prior to stepping on the mats and we are happy to provide cleaning wipes if needed at any time.
5. Avoid wearing jewelry and other accessories while training. These may cause minor injuries/abrasions to the skin. Small containers are available to store your jewelry in while participating in class.
6. Keep walkways clear of items; we have cubbies and hooks available for storage.
7. Please do not directly coach children or other students during class unless asked to. This will interfere with the student's ability to problem solve on their own, and it is disruptive to the instructors and to all students participating. We understand that this can be a habit of parents who only intend to be helpful. We are happy to speak with parents on the side before or after class if there is anything in particular you would like us to help the kids with (i.e. certain “cues” or certain areas of discipline you are trying to keep consistent at home and during sports/extracurricular activities.) If you have a young child that is brand new to Breathe, please note that we hold back on “overcorrection” in the very beginning as we spend a period of observation and also work to develop a trustworthy student-to-coach relationship. As your children grow more comfortable with us and accustomed to our environment, our coaching will be come more and more specific.
8. Good hygiene is not only considerate, but important to help each other maintain good health. This includes using necessary skincare products, wearing CLEAN uniform for every practice session, and keeping nails neat.
8a. Toe nails and finger nails MUST be kept clean and neatly trimmed at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you have acrylic or gel nails, they must be kept short and smooth. This is for your safety and that of your training partners and is non-negotiable. (At best, this hygiene habit allows us to avoid abrasions to one another’s skin. At worst, this hygiene habit allows us to avoid injuries as serious as laceration of one another’s eyes.)
9. Respect for yourself, for your instructors, and for your teammates will be expected at all times. Your instructors are here to support you if you run into any issues within the academy.
10. Videotaping/recording of our classes is prohibited.

ACADEMY ETIQUETTE
• Black belt instructors can be addressed as Professor, while instructors carrying a blue, purple, or brown belt can be addressed as Coach.
• You will often see many of tilt our heads downward as we pat our hands lightly against our sides. This is a form of “bowing” when entering and leaving the mat, or “bowing” to our training partner. This is a traditional sign of respect and gratitude, but not mandatory.
• We cultivate a welcoming environment. We expect our members to be welcoming of and helpful to new students when you can be. We have ALL experienced our first day of jiu jitsu, and this sport and practice has the ability to improve our overall quality of life. Showing respect for one another is expected, encouraged, and appreciated at Breathe Jiu Jitsu.
• If you are running late to class, you are still welcome to join us! Please try to arrive within the first 15 minutes of class, enter the building and step onto the mats quietly to minimize disruption. (If you are part of the competition team, please uphold yourself to a stricter standard of punctuality and be on time for the class line up.)
• Some students may actively be preparing for a competition or tournament, and may need to be particular about who they are training with. As instructors, this is supported. We do our best to communicate this and encourage our competitors to inform their teammates of this if they decide not to roll with someone due to significant differences in size or skill level.

Please feel free to contact us at info@breathejiujitsu.com at any time for questions or concerns.
